Attention All Members! The Hoboken Sailing Club is happy to announce the introduction of member clinics. Clinics can be taken by any member who is looking to hone their skills in any of the below categories. These skills will be necessary for your skipper certification!
Clinics will last two hours long and will have a maximum of four members to a boat. We will run two boats per clinic for a total of eight members. Sign up is on a first come first serve basis. Clinics can be reserved on our website at hobokensailingclub.com. There will be four sessions a week. Each session for that week will cover the same topic. (Ex. All four sessions in week 1 will cover docking, etc.) We will move to a new topic in the following week. Please see schedule below for details:
Man Overboard
Being able to successfully pick up a person in the water is a critical skill and this is the opportunity to master it.
Tacks and Jibes
Mastering tacks and jibes is a critical skill. This is the opportunity to practice and receive pointers from veteran sailors.
Reefing and Heavy Weather Sailing
The joy of sailing can be even greater when the wind builds although there are important skills necessary to ensure safety. This is a chance to garner a deeper understanding of reefing, sail controls and the best course of action in high wind events.
Seamanship (knots and safety)
Being a sailor includes a burden of responsibility and learning good seamanship is a way to ease that burden.
Engines and Docking
The Hudson River has substantial beautify combined with formidable obstacles. It’s important to have a strong grasp of engine operations to ensure the you get you and your crew home safely despite the occasional lack of wind.
“Slower is better” is our mantra as it pertains to docking at The Shipyard Marina.
Rigging, Derigging, and Flaking
Rigging is increasingly important as you develop your skills. This is an opportunity to learn the right way and also discover some tricks.
