The club is a member teaching member club where more experienced “Skippers” teach the newer “Crew” members through time out on the water (There are opportunities the club offers all members for advancement in more specific skills, more on that later).
There are two levels of membership. The entry level (your level now) is called a crew member. Skill level could range from novice to intermediate. The next level is a Skipper. A Skipper is responsible for the boat and its crew. For a boat to leave the dock, the following two conditions must be met:
A Skipper member must be on the boat
There must be a minimum of two persons on the boat. *
*A skipper and a guest can go out. This fulfills both requirements
A Skipper has proven that they can safely and effectively lead a boat while underway in the New York Harbor. The biggest emphasis in graduation to the Skipper level is safety. Can the Skipper safely operate the boat, and can they keep their crew safe? This is the Skipper’s most important job and that is what will be tested. We will cover how to become a skipper on the next page.
-
So how does a crew member take a boat out? The crew member can communicate directly with Skippers either privately or through our WhatsApp chat. Crew members might also see a Skipper member announce in the chat that they are going out and need crew. The Google Reservation Sheet is your tool to see the members sailing and add yourself to a boat. A detailed step by step follows:

Race nights consist of a spring, summer and fall, 7 race series (21 races total). Put your skills to the test as you face off against other members of the club. Teams will remain the same, but boats will be round robin (switched from race to race) to ensure fairness in racing. Boats are off the dock at 5:30 PM and the first race begins at 6:00 PM. Signups and results will be posted on yachtscoring.com. All three series cost $300 per boat. Individual series cost $125 and an individual race is $25. Skippers will be charged, and it will be up to the Skipper to determine reimbursement from members on the boat. Sign up information will be released shortly.
-
When you feel you are ready for a Skipper checkoff, you can make an appointment to do so. You will be tested as if the instructor is a novice, and you are leading the boat. A full outline of testing material can be found here. Skipper checkoffs are conducted every Friday at 4 PM.
