Learn to Sail

This class is an introductory class in sailing designed for the novice sailor. The class takes place over both weekend days (Saturday and Sunday) and includes 16 hours of theoretical and practical instruction. You will learn all of the basics of sailing in one weekend! Finally, you will have the opportunity to become certified at the US Sailing Basic Keelboat level.

Kick off the day with some laid-back classroom learning.

Lunch break! Bring your lunch and eat on our private pier or 
visit one of Hoboken’s many incredible restaurants nearby.

Finish up day one! See you tomorrow.

Meet back up in the classroom for day two.

Once you’ve completed your exams, you’re officially a sailor! Students who have completed Hoboken Sailing’s Learn to Sail can put 50% of their course fees towards a Sailing Club membership.

What do I wear?

Wear comfortable athletic clothing and dress for the weather. Layers in cooler temperatures and lighter clothes in warmer temperatures. Always remember your hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

Do I get a Sailing Certification?

Yes! At the end of the course, you will take the US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification exam online. If you pass this exam, you will receive your certification in the mail. Don’t worry! We will give you all of the information you need to successfully pass the exam.

Does the class take place on both weekend days?

Yes. The class takes place on Saturday AND Sunday from 9A-5P.

Do I have to attend both days?

Yes. The material you learn on Day One will be used as a foundation for the material you learn on Day Two.

Can I do Day One and Day Two on different weekends?

Unfortunately, the days must be taken consecutively. This will help you retain the information you have learned throuhgout the weekend.

What if there is inclement weather?

The Learn to Sail Course takes place in all weather except lightening. If lightening is scheduled in the forecast, we will make every attempt to provide the classroom material during this weather event. If we are unable to do so, you will receive a credit that can be booked for a future course.
